Preparing Growing Areas

Flower and Shrub Borders

The ground should be thoroughly dug over in autumn and left over winter.  Incorporate a soil conditioner such as J. Arthur Bower's Farm Manure, New Horizon Mulch & Mix, New Horizon Garden Compost or your own well-rotted garden compost.

In the spring a gentle turning may be required to break down any lumps and an application of good all-round plant food, such as Growmore or Fish, Blood & Bone, will give the plants an extra boost.

Vegetables

When digging the ground in autumn, add plenty of New Horizon Organic Garden Compost, J. Arthur Bower's Farm Manure or homemade garden compost and leave over winter.

In late spring add some J. Arthur Bower's Growmore or New Horizon Organic Plant Food and dig over once more to a spade's depth.

Root Crops

Dig the ground thoroughly in the autumn adding a soil conditioner such as New Horizon Mulch & Mix, New Horizon Garden Compost or your own well-rotted garden compost.  It is not advisable to use farmyard manure as it may cause some of your crops to fork or split.

Prior to planting out, an application of J. Arthur Bower's Superphosphate or Bonemeal is beneficial.
