We've just moved into a new house and were looking forward to having a garden for the first time, but the soil is awful and there's loads of rubble in it. What can we do?

This is a common problem nowadays but don’t worry – you will still be able to make a garden. Try and remove as much of the rubble as possible then dig in a soil conditioner such as New Horizon Garden Compost, New Horizon Soil Improver or New Horizon Mulch & Mix plus some J. Arthur Bower’s Blended Farm Manure. Use two bags of soil conditioner to one bag of the manure. The manure will encourage worms and microbes that are essential to a healthy soil. If your top soil is very thin, top it up with some J. Arthur Bower’s Top Soil or Premium Top Soil – this has added nutrients. Try and fork the top soil into your own soil rather just spreading over a layer. When it comes to planting try and dig a large hole and follow the instructions in our Planting Guide.
