I've always dug peat into my clay soil to lighten it, but now I've been told I shouldn't use it. Is this true and if so what can I use instead?

In days gone by, peat was widely used as a soil conditioner but nowadays it is not recommended for two main reasons – firstly, it doesn’t do a very good job of conditioning the soil; secondly it is a valuable material that should not be wasted in this way. You would be far better choosing a dedicated soil conditioner such as New Horizon Garden Compost, made from composted green material or New Horizon Mulch & Mix, made from composted bark and timber residue. Alternatively try J Arthur Bower’s Composted Bark, which has a fine dark appearance similar to peat.
