My lawn is very compacted and I wanted to improve the drainage so I bought some Lawn Sand. Now I have read the packet I think I may have bought the wrong thing – what exactly is Lawn Sand?
Lawn Sand is a traditional control for moss and is not suitable for improving drainage. Lawn Sand contains Iron Sulphate to kill the moss and some fertiliser to green up the grass. It should only be used as recommended on the packet. To improve drainage use J Arthur Bower's Sharp Sand or Grit Sand. Aerate your lawn using a garden fork or special aerator and brush the sand into the holes with a stiff broom.
