What are ericaceous plants and why do they need special compost?

Ericaceous plants belong to a plant family called Ericaceae. They do not like lime in their soil as they cannot then take up certain essential nutrients including iron and manganese. The ericaceous family includes some very popular garden plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, heathers and blueberries. In our compost range you will find two lime-free composts -

J Arthur Bower’s Ericaceous Compost and J Arthur Bower’s John Innes Ericaceous Compost. The John Innes mixture is a loam-based compost with added grit and is the best choice for permanent plantings and large containers – however it is not the best choice for blueberries. The J Arthur Bower’s Ericaceous Compost is perfect for seasonal displays and blueberries, but plants will need to be repotted every two years.
