Lawns - March
-
Grass will probably start growing more strongly and you will need to start regular mowing. Don’t cut too low at first – a light trim once a week will be sufficient.
-
If moss is a problem in your lawn you will need to control it to stop it choking out the grass. J Arthur Bower's Lawn Sand is a simple and effective way to kill off the moss and it also contains some feed to green up the grass. Listen to the forecast and don’t apply if frost is in the offing. Lawn Sand is best applied with a spreader – see pack for full instructions. Look at our Tips on Lawncare for more information.
-
Moss is very common in heavy compacted soils. It also flourishes in shady areas. It will always return if the conditions are right, so in the long term you should try and improve drainage by aerating your lawn with a garden fork or lawn aerator. Brush J Arthur Bower's Sharp Sand into the aeration holes.
-
Scarify your lawn to remove thatch if you didn’t do this in the autumn.
-
In milder areas apply J Arthur Bower's Lawn Feed towards the end of the month if weather permits. The feed works from the roots not the top growth – this is why the soil needs to be moist when you use it.
-
New turf can be laid this month. Apply a good general feed such as J Arthur Bower's Growmore to the prepared ground a few days before laying the turf.
