House and Conservatory Plants - March

  • Now is a good time to start re-potting houseplants. Take the plants out of their pots, tease out some of the old compost, trim off any dead roots and re-pot into J Arthur Bower's Houseplant Compost. Use a pot that is slightly larger than the previous one. Orchids, including phaelenopsis and cymbidiums can be repotted in to J Arthur Bower's Orchid Compost. For more information about repotting see our Quick Tips.

  • It’s important to keep watering and feeding Amaryllis (hippeastrum) that have finished flowering – this will build up flower buds for next year. Remove the flower head but leave the stem. Feed once a week with J Arthur Bower's Tub and Basket Liquid Feed or New Horizon Liquid Tomato Food until the foliage begins to turn yellow and die down.

  • Start feeding any houseplants that you are not repotting. J Arthur Bower's Multi-Purpose Liquid Plant Food is perfect for green plants. Flowering plants will benefit from the extra potash in J Arthur Bower's Tub and Basket Liquid Feed.

  • Micro-salads are all the rage in fashionable restaurants. Harvested at just a couple of inches high they are full of vitamins and taste delicious. If you don’t have a garden why not try growing your own. Save the clear plastic punnets that supermarkets use for tomatoes and fruit (the shallow ones are best). Make sure it has drainage holes. Put in a 5cm. (2 inch) layer of J Arthur Bower's Multi-Purpose Compost, water gently and sow your chosen seeds covering with J Arthur Bower's Vermiculite or some more compost. Choose seeds from the huge range of salad leaves and oriental greens now available.

  • Cacti and succulents.
