Lawns - February

  • Continue to keep off the lawn in frosty and snowy conditions.

  • In mild areas you may need to start mowing towards the end of the month. Don’t cut too low – a light trim is all that’s needed.

  • Moss is one of the most common lawn problems, thriving in damp, shady and compacted conditions. J Arthur Bower’s Lawn Sand is a simple and effective way of controlling moss. In milder areas you can apply Lawn Sand towards the end of this month, once the grass starts growing. Listen to the forecast and don’t apply if frost is in the offing. Lawn Sand is best applied with a spreader – see pack for full instructions. Look at our Guide on Lawncare for more information.

  • If you have a small lawn and only a few weeds, now is a good time to dig them out using a narrow trowel. Daisies, dandelions, buttercups, thistles and hawkweed are fairly easy to remove. Fill in the hole with J Arthur Bower’s Premium Top Soil, firm it down and sow Lawn Seed over the top.

  • If you’re thinking of making a new lawn in the spring now’s the time to dig over the area so that it’ll be ready for seeding or turf once the weather improves. Dig in some organic matter such as New Horizon Mulch & Mix. If the soil is poor you can add some J Arthur Bower’s Blended Farm Manure as well. If the area has only a thin layer of top soil fork in some J Arthur Bower’s Premium Top Soil at the same time.
