In addition to avoiding the use of plastic which consumes precious oil reserves and causes a disposal problem when sent to landfill, biodegradable pots have the benefit of avoiding root damage and checked growth as the pot is retained on transplanting and the roots grow through the sides and base.
Sinclair Fyba pots are made from a strong paper-like material made from recycled paper and textile fibres, mixed with a small amount of pure bitumen. They are available in three types according to the length of time each is designed to last.
Alternatively Sinclair offer peat pots which are made from a mixture of blond sphagnum peat and wood fibres with a starch binder.
